The Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur

Guys, I have to make a confession before I bombard you with a list of reasons why you should make it your life’s mission to experience The Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur at least once. For most of my life, the choice of hotel has been WAY down on my list when travelling. I happily chose hotels based purely on functionality so any place that could give me a good night’s sleep was a great option. Maybe if it wasn’t for the opportunities opened up by the blog (AlhadmulAllah times infinity) I would’ve continued to believe this and missed out on a VERY important aspect of travelling.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not telling you to sell your left kidney to pay for a fancy schmancy hotel with no money left over for anything else. Here’s the idea I’m putting forward for your consideration (gettin’ formal to get your attention, thanks) – utilize your travel budget in such a way that you get to spend a night (or two!) somewhere nicer than you’d normally pick. Why? Because the right hotel can also be an experience you take away with you from your travels. I believe the claw marks I left in the carpet at The Ritz when being dragged out can bear witness to this.

Seriously though, we only spent one night (out of four) at The Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur but it quickly became the highlight of our trip. And, hands-down, our BEST hotel experience. Ever. Let me explain why we loved it so much.

The location

It’s located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur’s city centre in an area called Bukit Bintang. Everything you need is a 5 to 10-minute walk away. Such as three of the city’s best shopping malls. And a bunch of other stuff which would take up the whole post space if I started listing it down.

For everything else, let me take you guys on a pictorial tour (’cause words won’t be enough, hehe).

From the moment we stepped into the lobby, we could feel the difference (I can promise you this post will be full of many such cliches, #sorrynotsorry). It was grand and sparkly without being too intimidating or cold. We were immediately greeted by their staff with a genuine warmth instead of being left to fend for ourselves. And the whole check-in process took under 2 minutes, I kid you not.

So much space you don’t know what to do with it (in a good way!)

We stayed in a one-bedroom suite which instantly stole my heart and ran away with it. There was a totally separate sitting area, two bathrooms (I was quick to claim the bigger one, ha) AND a walk-in closet large enough to sleep in. The sitting area even had its own separate TV, apart from the one in the room (so no fighting over the remote).

All these fruits were waiting to welcome us when we entered, with a personalised note.

A little while later they brought us this tray of chocolates & macarons (also complimentary!). Check out the moon and star ala Pakistani flag. Was it a special touch added just because we were from Pakistan? I wouldn’t be surprised!

Class A amenities (and more!)

Guys, they had toiletries from Asprey (fo’ realz). The room had its own coffee machine, along with all the other stuff that goes with it. We had access to the club that offers snacks any time of the day, gym, spa and the swimming pool (which has its own bar where you can pick up complimentary water or fruit to nibble on by the poolside). There’s even a nursery for kids complete with educational activities and toys. What more can a person ask for!

Personal butler service (say whaaaat)

Judge me all you want but I’ve always secretly fantasised about having a Jeeves in my life. At The Ritz-Carlton, my dream finally came true. Ismadi was the name of the tiny man in the suit who rang the doorbell with welcome drinks and introduced himself as our butler. Was the baby asleep in the cot he had taken the liberty of placing in our room, was his first question. He was overcome by horror when we explained to him that there was no baby, apologising profusely before promptly taking the cot away. We obviously took an immediate liking to him. He was so cute and affable, who wouldn’t?

Insane attention to detail

With things as small as individual lights to spotlight each painting or decoration piece, we couldn’t help but be astounded by the attention to detail at The Ritz. It was just the tiniest things like adding reading lights to the headboard despite the fact that there were already lamps on the bedside tables. I can’t speak for you but these little touches really made all the difference to me.

Afternoon tea (cue British accent)

Once we were all settled in (and had taken enough pictures and videos of the room to immortalise our memories for generations to come) we headed downstairs to partake some English-style afternoon tea.

The three-tier spread offered delicious quiches, a delightful assortment of cold sandwiches and mouthwatering desserts (sorry, just give me a moment to wipe the drool off my keyboard). This was accompanied by our choice of tea. I picked raspberry flavoured tea off a menu that offered 45 different options of tea I didn’t even know existed! :o. Every time our cups would get slightly empty, someone would come and re-fill them. We probably had more tea during that one hour than we’ve had in our entire lifetimes lolol (not that I minded).

Dinner at The Library

We wrapped up the day with a four-course meal at The Library where you eat surrounded by close to 2000 books (another dream come true!) on topics ranging from film and theatre to art and travel. So, if you ever run out of conversation topics, there’s always a book on hand to discuss. There was a duck entrée on the Menu du Jour and since neither of us had tried duck before we mutually decided to order that (tastes like chicken but makes you feel a whole lot fancier, lulz). Our other selection was the carvery of the day which the chef himself steps out of the kitchen to carve out for you.

As a little surprise (’cause that’s the kind of stuff they like to do), they had concocted these non-alcoholic cocktails for us. Also, before you rush to judgement, the green bottle is sparkling water!

Sidenote: Still can’t believe all of this actually happened. Maybe it was just an elaborate dream?

The best pillows in the world
And a breakfast spread from heaven

Completely stuffed, we waddled our way back to the room where I fell into a deep sleep right after exclaiming how comfortable the bed was. The pillows were so light and fluffy, they felt like clouds under my head (if not for some exemplary self-restraint that somehow appeared at an opportune time, I would’ve brought them all home with me).

Pure, sleepy joy in anticipation of a good night’s sleep

The next morning, we couldn’t pry ourselves off the bed. Only the thought of missing out on breakfast at the Ritz-Carlton finally gave us an incentive to get up.

And boy, was it worth it. I mean, there was all the usual stuff of course. And then there was the extra Ritz-Carlton stuff – fresh juice bar, unlimited beverage options, a sushi boat, all the cheeses you can think of, salad bar featuring things like hummus, the list goes on.

The Final Word

Is it value for money? Absolutely (if you’ve got the budget for it). You can genuinely see the amount of thought they’ve put into each aspect of your experience which really makes you appreciate it more.

If you’re like me, however, then it’s not the kind of place that you can afford for the entire length of your stay. But treating yourself to a day & night of being made to feel like royalty? Yes, please.

Drawbacks? There are really only two I could think of:

  1. It sets the bar for your hotel experience really high so you may never like any other place quite as much. We stayed here on our first night in KL and while the other hotel we chose afterwards was also pretty nice, it couldn’t hold a candle to the Ritz.
  2. With all the special treatment and amenities you get, you won’t feel like leaving the hotel (maybe ever). Which is obviously a problem if you intend to go sightseeing.

Room rates start from MYR 800 per night (which I think is a lot cheaper than other Ritz-Carltons all over the world so it’s the perfect place to get your Ritz experience).

If you missed the post about the totally terrible way our trip to Malaysia started, you can read it here.

I also shared my experience at The Ritz-Carlton on the Soul Sisters Pakistan blog which you can check out here or here (totally different from this post, I promise).

We were lucky enough to be hosted by The Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur but all opinions are based on my personal experience. Would totally want to splurge on this experience again once we’ve saved up enough moneyzz c:

Converting to Singapore dollars (I’m from Singapore), the hotel room’s price is reasonable for a Ritz Carlton, definitely bookmarking this the next time I head to KL!

  10. What a beautiful hotel! We definitely tend towards hotels that blend location and service within an affordable budget, but it’s fun to splurge every once in a while. I would LOVE to try out that tea service–what a fun way to dine!

  14. Oh WOW… the Ritz really knows how to do it, don’t they?! I love your drawbacks – they’re hilarious! I’ve stayed at a few luxury properties before and the attention to detail and service really make you never want to leave. I’m so happy you had a wonderful stay!

  15. This hotel really does look glam. I have not stayed in a really neat hotel in a while and would love to be able to experience this one.
